Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons released information on cosmetic procedures performed in 2016. The ASPS National Clearinghouse of Plastic Surgery Procedural Statistics has been produced since 2000 and represents a comprehensive estimate of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed by American Board of Plastic Surgery surgeons.
The increase in procedures from 2015 to 2016, as well as over the last 16 years, presents a clear reduction in social stigma around exploring cosmetic surgery as a way to improve one’s self image. While increases of 3% or 4% seem insignificant, these numbers actually represent hundreds of thousands of patients.
Women continue to receive the majority of procedures year over year, however the amount of men taking advantage of both surgical & minimally-invasive procedures has increased by 3% since 2015. Men are mainly embracing Botox as a treatment to combat the appearance of aging with over 440,000 procedures completed in 2016.
Patients in the Mountain/Pacific region of the US lead the way in cosmetic procedures with 5 million completed last year. The Southern Atlantic (19%), New England (19%), East South Central (16%) and East North Central (16%) round out the top 5 regions in order of procedures completed.
