Re-contour your chest for a more masculine appearance

Plastic Surgery Specialists - Maryland Cosmetic Surgeons

Men with enlarged breasts are often very uncomfortable with their appearance, hiding their  upper bodies under layers of clothing, even in the middle of summer, and avoiding certain activities. Reasons for this condition, known as gynecomastia, include genetics, weight gain and the use of certain medications. It can happen at any age, even to teenage boys.

A breast reduction specifically for men can give you a more masculine appearance. Many men say that after having this surgery they feel more self-confident. For some, this confidence leads them to go shirtless in public for the first time in years.

What is male breast reduction surgery?

Male breast reduction surgically re-contours a man’s chest, by removing excess fat and glandular tissue and giving that area a flatter, firmer, more masculine definition.

Your Annapolis Male Breast Reduction Consultation

We understand this topic can be difficult for many men to discuss. For the answers and information you need, your first step should be a private consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at our main office in Annapolis or at one of our satellite offices in Easton or Prince Frederick.

During the consultation in one of our comfortable exam rooms, we’ll review your goals and your medical history, and you’ll discuss things like:

  • Your goals. Why do you want male breast reduction surgery and what outcome are you hoping for?
  • Your medical history. You’ll talk about things like:
    • Are you taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs and/or herbal supplements?
    • Do you smoke?
    • Have you had any previous surgeries?
  • Your body. The doctor will examine and evaluate your breast area.
  • The procedure. You’ll have time to ask whatever you need. We recommend writing down your questions beforehand.

Understanding the Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Both of our highly trained surgeons perform this surgery, done under general anesthesia, in our fully accredited, state-of-the-art, ambulatory surgery center in Annapolis. The technique begins with an incision around each areola (the dark skin that surrounds the nipple). Through the incisions, the surgeon then removes tissue, fat and skin as needed. Liposuction may also be used to improve breast contour. Our surgeons do their best to hide any scars.

If you’re considering a male breast reduction, your next step should be a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.

After your Annapolis Male Breast Reduction Procedure: Recovery and Results

You’ll leave your procedure with a compression garment over your chest, which you’ll wear for a week or two, to help minimize swelling and support healing. Most men return to work or school within several days of the procedure.

Almost immediately, you’ll see improvement in the shape and appearance of your chest. Though the results should be permanent, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Any changes, such as significant weight gain, use of certain medications and steroids, like those that influence testosterone levels, can cause the gynecomastia to return.

What are the risks of a male breast reduction?

As with most surgical procedures, you may have several days of discomfort, but that should be easily controlled with medication prescribed by your doctor. Your surgeon will give you a list of post-operative instructions, which you should follow closely.
