fat removalIf you want to lose fat on parts of your body and do it without surgery, you’ll be pleased to know that Plastic Surgery Specialists offers effective Fat Reduction without Surgery.

Increasingly, people are opting for methods without surgery. And if you have a moderate amount of fat to remove, you should seriously consider these nonsurgical techniques.

Cold Temperatures Also Widely Used for Fat Reduction

Cryolipolysis is a widely used method of fat reduction. It is sometimes called CoolSculpting – the technique takes its name from the process of freezing fat cells, developed by Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc. It works to tighten your skin because fat cells are adversely affected by cool temperatures.

When the cryolipolysis professional “freezes” the cells in the target area, your body answers with an inflammatory response. This causes the surrounding macrophages, or protective cells, to eat the fat cells. The professional administering this treatment uses a special device to deliver cold temperatures.

What is CoolSculpting?

Coolsculpting is a nonsurgical treatment for people who want to lose unwanted fat but don’t want the risk, discomfort or recovery time of surgeries such as liposuction. It works because scientists discovered that fat cells are destroyed by cold temperatures, though at a higher temperature than regular cells. Specifically, doctors noticed that kids who ate popsicles developed dimples because some of the fat cells in their cheeks were destroyed! Scientists also know that when fat cells are destroyed, they don’t return to the treated area.

The areas that are usually treated are the tummy, the arms and the thighs. Other areas are the rolls of fat beneath the buttocks, around the bra area and the back. The procedure is for both men and women.

What to Expect

First, the client needs to have a consultation with a clinician to help find the best approach to resculpting their body. After evaluating the client’s body from several angles, the clinician and client decide on the areas that will be best served by the procedure. Some clients only need one treatment, while others need to come back for multiple treatments.

People who shouldn’t have cryolipolysis are those whose blood can’t handle cold temperatures. It’s also not a treatment for obesity.

During a session, our esthetician places a device on the area where the client wishes to lose fat. The appliance is held to the skin by a vacuum cup and cools down the area to 39 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes ice crystals form in the fat cells right beneath the skin. Eventually, the ice crystals rupture the fat cells, whose contents are then absorbed by the body the way they would be normally. The surrounding tissue is unharmed.

It usually takes a few weeks for the body to absorb what’s left of the fat cells, and during that time the client will be able to see an improvement in their silhouette.

The CoolSculpting session lasts about an hour or less. No anesthesia is necessary, though the appliance feels cold at first, and as it sucks the tissue up into itself the client may feel a pinching or pulling sensation. But the client eventually grows used to the sensation and relaxes during the session. Some people bring reading material, listen to music or even take a nap during the procedure. When the session is over, the client can return to their usual activities.

After a CoolSculpting Treatment

Though the client can leave the office soon after the procedure, the treated area may be numb, tingle, sting or itch. There may also be some swelling, tenderness and bruising. These side effects recede after a few days or weeks.
