Many visible signs of aging can be traced to loss of volume. Time, gravity, and sun exposure cause the skin’s natural collagen to break down, and as facial tissue thins, lines become etched around the nose and mouth and your cheeks may look a little hollow.

There’s a reason surface-level skin treatments often fail to address facial wrinkles and fine lines thoroughly – they don’t replace the volume loss. Dermal fillers help smooth facial lines on the surface of the skin by replacing that lost volume and supplementing the collagen under the skin.

What are dermal fillers?

Injectable dermal fillers such as Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft, JUVÉDERM®, RADIESSE®, Voluma®, Vollure® and Vobella® are safe, non-surgical injections that replace the skin’s natural collagen to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face.

Here are a few of the common issues dermal fillers can help improve:

  • Smooth lines around nose and mouth (a.k.a. marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses) or a chin crease
  • Enhance & restore volume to cheeks and temples
  • Diminish vertical lip lines and plump & enhance lips
  • Improve the symmetry of facial features
  • Add volume under the eyes

Dermal fillers help men and women of all ages naturally soften the aging process, allowing you to look younger and feel more confident.

Understanding dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected just below the surface of the skin, filling in unwanted lines and wrinkles and adding definition and volume. The area is first cleaned thoroughly and then a precise amount of filler is injected strategically beneath your skin.

Most of the fillers contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Depending on the number of areas being treated, the process may be as short as 30 minute or as long as an hour, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after the treatment.

After your dermal filler: recovery and results

You should notice results immediately, including the softening of facial lines, wrinkles and scars, a more defined lip border and even fuller lips if you choose to have dermal filler injected in your lips. Some people experience bruising, swelling and slight redness around the injection site that can last from a few hours to two weeks.

Keep in mind that like natural collagen, injectable dermal fillers eventually break down. To maintain the improvements, it’s best to repeat the injections at six- to eight-month intervals.

Some patients combine dermal fillers with other wrinkle reducing treatments. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular treatment to treat “dynamic” wrinkles, and those who want to reduce blemishes and achieve smoother, even-toned skin may have a chemical peel  at the same time.

If you’re considering dermal fillers, your next step should be a consultation with one of our skin care experts.
