Rosacea Treatments with FotoFacial IPL For Smooth, Refreshed SkinDermatologists don’t really know what causes rosacea, but some have speculated that low levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach may contribute to it. The good news is our estheticians at PSS MediSpa have a solution. It’s pain-free rosacea treatments with FotoFacial IPL.

Rosacea is a skin condition that leaves a person’s cheeks and nose abnormally red. Rosacea is estimated to affect at least 16 million people in the United States alone and approximately 45 million worldwide. The affected skin may also produce pimples, similar to acne. It usually affects middle-aged men and women, though women are three times as likely to suffer from it. However, the symptoms of rosacea are worse in men. Rosacea triggers include alcohol, hot or spicy foods, emotional stress, smoking, and heat. Currently, it is believed that rosacea patients have a genetically mediated reduction in the ability to dampen facial inflammation that is incited by environmental factors but the exact cause is not know.

How FotoFacial IPL Works

IPL works by sending pulses of light into the area to be treated. IPL treats not only rosacea but also scars, uneven pigmentation and birthmarks. With rosacea, IPL works by getting rid of the dilated blood vessels on the face. The wavelength of light destroys the hemoglobin in the blood and damages the walls of the capillaries in the face. Over time, the body absorbs them and lessens the appearance of the rosacea.

What Happens With Pain-free Rosacea Treatments with FotoFacial IPL

After a consultation at our main office or any of our satellite offices, the client has the treatment performed at Annapolis.

For at least two weeks before the treatment the client needs to:

  • Stop smoking
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Discontinue use of anticoagulant drugs and NSAIDs
  • Discontinue use of vitamin A-based medications

When clients arrive for the treatment, they’ll be led into a special room. The esthetician places eye pads on their eyes and applies a cool gel to the area. The hand piece is placed on the skin, and the IPL is activated. To be honest, it may sting a bit at first, though the stinging sensation becomes less and less obvious with each session.

After the treatment, the gel is wiped off, and the client’s face is soothed with a warm, damp towel. The esthetician applies a moisturizer impregnated with sunscreen on the treatment area. If clients are still uncomfortable, they can hold an ice pack to their face for five to 10 minutes before going home.

Though clients can put on a bit of makeup after the IPL treatment, they need to stay out of the sun while they heal. It may seem inconvenient but the results will be worth it.

Most clients need three to five sessions spaced a month apart to see results. The treatments take about a half an hour to an hour and a half, depending on how much of the face is involved.
