Imagine someone making an entrance into a Christmas party sporting a tan that looks like she just got back from a vacation in the Caribbean. In fact, she probably did no such thing. She just had a spray tan given by one of our professionals at Plastic Surgery Specialists, the premiere cosmetic and plastic surgery spa in Maryland.

How Does One Spray On a Tan? spray tan

It’s exactly what it says. To get a spray tan, a mist is sprayed over the body. The good news is that the client avoids the hazards of ultraviolet radiation an individual is subjected to when out in the sun for a long period of time or in a tanning bed. A compound called dihydroxyacetone, or DHA is applied to the skin and turns it a rich bronze. It’s as if the client’s been sunning on a white-sand beach a long way from the state of Maryland. DHA is not absorbed into the skin and is completely non-toxic. It lasts between five days and a week.

Is It As Easy As It Sounds?

A client needs to shave a day or two before the spray tan, and exfoliate the skin as much as possible. She shouldn’t use makeup, deodorant or any artificial substance on the skin, though a bit of vaseline on the drier parts of the body such as the knees and palms of the hands help. So does a touch of lip balm, and a shower cap to protect her hair.

There are a variety of ways to apply a spray tan. At PSS MediSpa, one of our professionals uses an airbrush to spray on the tan. It’s so disarmingly easy, and much less costly than even the most inexpensive type of plastic surgery. Unlike plastic surgery, there’s no downtime.
